Sassparilla (Sassmo) Mangione

November 19, 2016 by

People would often ask me, “Where did you get your dog?” My response was always, “She found me”. Sass and I met when she was 6 months old and I was a mere 14. She was running through the irrigation ditches in front of my parents’ house when my mom and neighbor spotted the cute little puppy. When no one claimed her, she became mine and I hers for 16 years.

We learned to drive a car together, went to college together and even met her Daddy (my husband) together. She was not only my best friend, she was my kindred spirit. Her favorite things in life were eating eggs in the morning, chasing bunnies, going for rides and just simply being anywhere near her family. She was stubborn and loyal to the end.

Sassy was known for her spirit and beautiful sense of affection for people. We love to talk about the times that she would run like the wind and get into trouble. She was a wild woman who was so happy to be with me everyday. She was so very pure in her love and could communicate with her eyes and smile as if she were human.

Words cannot describe the pain and heartache we feel now that she has left her physical body. I try to take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in a place where she can run and play the way she did when we found each other on that summer day in 1998.

I am thankful for the love that we shared and think of our time as a gift from heaven.

Daddy and I love you Sassmo and will keep you forever in our hearts. I cry now, but will someday look back on all of the times you saved me and have a smile on my face.
